RA Summer Exhibition Project : Ideas and Inspiration

Setting out on the exciting adventure of creating a poster for the prestigious RA Summer Exhibition 2024 was driven by creativity, invention, and a lively synthesis of artistic inspirations. The creative endeavour that drew inspiration from a wide range of artists spanning centuries—from the classical mastery of Michelangelo to the contemporary energy of Beeple—was made possible by the thematic focus on colours. I cordially urge you to immerse yourself in this extensive investigation, delving into the rich tapestry of concepts and sources of inspiration that influenced the creation of my poster—a visual symphony that echoes the revolutionary spirit of art throughout history.

When I started my investigation, Michelangelo Buonarroti's brilliance came through as a guiding principle. My artistic vision has been profoundly impacted by the Italian Renaissance artist's mastery of sculpture and deep comprehension of human anatomy. Embodying the very essence of the human spirit, the iconic "David" and the figures adorning the Sistine Chapel epitomised a triumph of fortitude and resilience. Drawing inspiration from this timeless grace, I aimed to include elements of power and resolve in my RA poster, reinterpreting Michelangelo's anatomical accuracy within a dynamic, modern setting. The resulting colour combination creates a visually arresting and dynamic depiction that represents diversity as well as a contemporary interpretation of fortitude.

A turning point in my research brought me to the colourful realm of Pop Art, where Andy Warhol became a prominent character. Warhol subverted conventional ideas of art and beauty with his inventive use of vivid, strong colours, especially in his silkscreen prints. Motivated by his revolutionary approach to common subjects, I tried to apply a similar creativity to Blender 3D sculpting. Following in Warhol's footsteps, I set out to investigate unusual and visually arresting colour schemes in the digital space. This method attempted to inject dynamic energy into 3D sculptures, providing an immersive and visually engaging experience for the RA Summer Exhibition.

As my artistic journey developed, I discovered that Dadaism, which was pioneered by German artist Hannah Höch, drew me in. In my vision, Höch's groundbreaking use of photomontage to subvert gender roles and societal conventions has a lasting impact. I started a 3D montage in Blender by transferring her revolutionary methods to the digital sphere. In keeping with Höch's revolutionary spirit, my aim was to build a narrative about identity, form, and societal structures by combining and altering various sculptural materials. The incorporation of a vibrant and varied colour scheme was intended to give the digital area vitality, in keeping with the current applicability of her socio-critical methodology.

Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, is a pioneer in the field of digital art today, especially in the areas of digital collage and NFT art. His ability to combine several components fluidly was a guide for me as I explored. I tried to emulate Beeple's dynamic approach to Blender 3D sculpting by taking inspiration from his varied style. The poster aimed to embody Beeple's entrepreneurial attitude in utilising technology to reinvent artistic expression by incorporating vivid colours and investigating multi-layered storylines.

The upshot of combining these ideas and influences was a poster that masterfully combines aspects of modern, avant-garde, and classical design. Warhol's colour scheme combines contemporary vitality with the classical grace of Michelangelo's figurative sculptures. Höch's socially critical storyline blends seamlessly with Beeple's innovative method of digital collage. The end product is a kaleidoscope of creative components that all work together to create a message that is both potent and thought-provoking.

Colours are the connecting element that weaves together a wide range of centuries' worth of influences in the magnificent tapestry of my poster for the RA Summer Exhibition 2024. This innovative and exploratory voyage highlights how technology can be a transforming medium for artistic expression. The poster is a monument to the ageless conversation between tradition and innovation, classical elegance and modern vigour, echoing the revolutionary spirit of the artists who inspired its creation. A visual adventure that transcends artistic borders and speaks to the ever-evolving nature of creativity, the poster encourages spectators to join it through the study of vivid colours, dynamic stances, and narrative storytelling.
